Avalon Crab Apple Northumbrian Runes
The Anglo-Saxon Runes originated as an alphabet of 26 runes in Frisia, with an additional 3 runes being added when the Anglo-Saxons migrated to Britain in the 7th Century. The Northumbrian runes is a further expansion of this futhark by 4 more letters, to an alphabet of 33. There is little archaeological evidence remaining to provide meanings for these extra 4 letters – they are not included in the Anglo-Saxon rune poem and it’s possible that they are a relatively more modern invention.
A gorgeous set of handmade apple runes, made from a branch of apple from a Crab Apple Tree that grows close to the Isle of Avalon near to Glastonbury, associated closely with the Apple Isle of celtic mythology.
The runes are about 2 cm in diameter and are handmade and are of the Northumbrian system (please check photos for scale - penny not included).
There are 33 runes and one blank rune should an accident befall one or if you follow the more modern tradition of working with a blank rune for wyrd.
The apple has mythology, folktales and legends attached to it throughout worldwide mythology. It is associated with, of course the Isle of Avalon - the Apple Island - with transitions and journeys, as well as fertility and fecundity.
You will receive a set similar, but perhaps not identical to that pictured. Your set of runes will arrive in a bag made from upcycled fabric and with a basic information sheet.
