20 Large, Quirky Ogham Staves made on “Corresponding Woods”

GBP 60.00

A set of 20 handmade ogham staves. Each ogham stave is made from the wood of the tree that it is associated with. Thus, the birch stave is made on birch wood, rowan on rowan wood etc.

Each stave for these sets is carefully selected for character – some will be straight, some will be curved, some will have forks or side branches or knots in the bark, some might have lichen.

The staves are on average 10cm long and 1-2cm in diameter – but there is greater variation in size owing to the unique nature of these staves.  They all have the bark left on (other than reed which has none). The ogham fed (symbol) is pyrographed (burnt) with the appropriate ogham symbol. The arrow on each of the ogham marks the bottom of the stave.

The set will come with a information sheet offering a basic introduction to divining with ogham and a basic (handmade draw-string bag made from upcycled fabric to keep them in.

What is Ogham?

The Celtic Tree Ogham is an Irish alphabet created to record Primitive Irish.  It consists of 20 feda, with an extra 5 forfedha added at a later date. Like the many Runic Alphabets, each Fed (letter/symbol) has meanings associated with it. One such set of associations is with trees – and this is what the Ogham has become best known for. While its uses beyond writing and carving in stone are lost to time, its use in magic has been recorded in Irish mythology and it is likely that it could have been used for divination. Most of the sets made by Greenwomancrafts include the original 20 feda only, with the forfedha being available by commission only.
